Timing Makes a Difference

Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Your body begins producing this hormone once a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. However, the amounts of hCG start undetectably small and rise gradually, so it takes time to trigger a positive pregnancy test.

Testing too early can lead to an inaccurate result, often a false negative. It’s best not to rely on a negative pregnancy test result before your period arrives.

However, if your pregnancy test does turn positive early, you can trust that result because false positives are very rare.

Ideal Test Timing

For the most reliable result, wait until at least the first day after your missed period before taking a pregnancy test. If your cycle is regular, this timing usually provides enough time for hCG to be detected.

If your cycle is irregular or you’re unsure when your period should arrive, try testing three weeks after the last time you had sex.

Taking the test first thing in the morning may also improve accuracy since your urine is most concentrated at that time.

If the Test Is Negative but Your Period Hasn’t Started

It’s possible to receive a negative result even if you are pregnant. This can happen if you have ovulated later than expected or if your hormone levels are still building.

If your period still hasn’t arrived, wait a few days and test again. You may also visit our center for a lab-quality test.
