Many people are shocked to find out they’re pregnant if they don’t have knowledge of how their cycle coincides with conception. Are you in shock that you’re pregnant because you didn’t know when conception was least likely to occur?

Keep reading to learn more about the connection between your cycle and potential pregnancy/conception!

How Your Cycle and Pregnancy Are Correlated?

Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from the ovary and remains in a fallopian tube for 12-24 hours. During this time, it can be fertilized by sperm. Ovulation is necessary for pregnancy, as this is when you are most fertile. Therefore, when you’re not ovulating, conception is not as likely.

A normal menstrual cycle is 28 days, and ovulation happens around 14 days before your next period. It’s possible to get pregnant outside of those 12 to 24 hours since sperm can live for as long as five days after sexual intercourse (depending on the conditions).

You cannot become pregnant apart from ovulation since the ovaries are not releasing an egg; there isn’t anything for the sperm to fertilize.
