What to Know If You're Considering an Abortion

Are you considering abortion after finding out you’re pregnant unexpectedly? You are not alone in your situation. We’re here to help you understand your unique pregnancy details and help you feel informed about abortion so you can make a choice with clarity.

When considering abortion, safeguard your pregnancy with pregnancy confirmation and education about your options.

Know the Risks

Medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill, consists of two different abortion drugs that work to terminate an existing pregnancy: mifepristone and misoprostol. The FDA only recommends medical abortion for women through 10 weeks of pregnancy. The possible physical risks of medical abortion include:

  • An incomplete abortion (which may require surgical abortion).
  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work.
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding.
  • Infection.
  • Fever.
  • Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach.

Dilation & Evacuation (D&E) and Dilation & Curettage (D&C) are the two common types of surgical abortion. They each work to dilate the cervix and use vacuum aspiration and surgical tools to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. Both types of surgical abortions come with similar physical risks, including:

  • Damage to the uterus or cervix
  • Uterine perforation (accidentally putting a hole in the uterus with one of the instruments used)
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes
  • Scarring of the inside of the uterus
  • Reaction to the medicines or anesthesia, such as problems breathing
  • Not removing all of the tissue, requiring another procedure

Confirm Your Pregnancy Details

Be sure to follow up your positive home pregnancy test with a lab-quality pregnancy test to ensure your results. Pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken either after a missed period or ten days after possible conception.

Follow up your positive pregnancy test with an ultrasound to determine your unique pregnancy details, including the following:

  1. Your pregnancy’s viability (if there’s a heartbeat & is progressing)
  2. Your pregnancy’s location (if pregnancy is located within the uterus)
  3. Your pregnancy’s gestational age (how far along you are)

Confirming these important pregnancy details will help you understand what pregnancy options you’re eligible for and alert you to any potential pregnancy concerns, such as ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.
