About Pregnancy Tests

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone is produced after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, usually six to ten days after conception.

As hCG levels increase in your body, they can be detected in both urine and blood, providing a positive result when the hormone is present.

Types of Pregnancy Tests

There are two main types of pregnancy tests: blood tests and urine tests.

  • Blood tests are typically performed at a doctor’s office or hospital. They can detect pregnancy earlier than many urine tests, sometimes as soon as seven to ten days after conception. However, most women prefer to begin with a urine test due to their convenience and lower cost.
  • Urine tests are the most common type and are readily available at pharmacies or grocery stores. They’re most accurate when taken one day after your missed period, allowing hCG levels enough time to rise. While some tests claim to detect pregnancy earlier, testing after your missed period generally gives the most reliable results, reducing the chance of a false negative. There are also lab-quality urine tests, which we provide at our Center. These urine tests can detect pregnancy as early as 7-10 days following conception.

Using A Pregnancy Test

At-home pregnancy tests are simple to use and widely available. Depending on the test, you may need to hold the test in your urine stream, dip it into a urine sample, or place drops of urine onto the test. Always follow the specific instructions for the test you are using.

The result will typically appear after a few minutes. It could be a plus or minus sign, the words “yes” or “no,” one line or two lines, or “pregnant” or “not pregnant.” Be sure to wait the recommended amount of time, usually around two minutes or more, before checking the results. Most tests also have a control line or symbol to indicate the test is working properly. If this line does not appear, the test may be faulty, and a new test is needed.
